Suriname or Surinam, officially the Republic of Suriname, is a country in northern South America. It is the smallest independent country on the continent. Originally, the country was spelled Surinam by English settlers and was part of a group of colonies known as Dutch Guiana. Surniame got independant from the Netherlands in 1975.
